BRIEF
Keeping F15 fighter planes on standby and ready-for-action turns out to be a challenging task. Each nut, motherboard, handle, pipeline and switch, needs spares, and the tools to make spares. The logistics in managing the maintenance of the planes is huge.
INSIGHT
Successfully designing a service that would deliver on the brief required us to build a deep understanding of a very specific group of users: Naval Ratings (that’s sailors to you and me) and Officers. Not only that, but this service would be accessed in a unique environment: the underbelly of a highly sophisticated aircraft carrier.
To overcome this we used ethnographic research — studying the user in the context where they’d be interacting with our solution. This enabled us to understand everything from how light conditions would require a high contrast interface to dexterity issues caused by equipment such as gloves.
OUTCOME
From our discovery work we went on to produce an ‘alpha’ prototype, following the government's digital service standard. This prototype was built upon a front-end toolkit we created to enable data scientists to rapidly expose data to end-users in new and inventive ways. Our prototype was tested with naval officers and showcased at Information Warrier — an event for the defence sector demonstrating the latest innovations in data science.
